While the ultimate goal of the series is to put on three races that are fun for all and raises money for the scholarship fund, a secondary aim is to educate participants on how they can lessen their environmental footprint. We hope that the race series will provide a useful model for other races in the area on how to put on sustainable events. Examples of how we will be doing just that:
- We are teaming up with UCSB's Associated Students Recycling to have all leftover materials either recycled or composted.
- Each race will be "off the grid" thanks to the Solar Roller unit provided by SunPower.
- Biodegradable cups and no plates!
- Runners are encouraged to bring unwanted shoes that we will then donate to Nike's Re-use a Shoe program.
- Water will be supplied through Kangen Water which provides a uniqe filtration system that eliminates the need for water bottling and distribution.
- Ride Sharing will be encouraged through a customized page at PickUpPal
- A bike corral will be available for runners that choose to use pedal power to get to the events.
- We are using chip timing, with the chips being reused after each race.
- Clif Bar (one of our sponsors of the event) wrappers will be recycled through the Terra Cycle program.
- We will be promoting runners to reuse their bib number from race to race, cutting down on the number of race bibs that will need to be distributed.
